India stands at a pivotal moment. As one of the fastest-growing major economies, we have the opportunity and responsibility to shape the future of industrial innovation. Yet rising protectionism threatens to slow our progress, especially in the race to develop and deploy sustainable technologies.
The World Bank has warned that protectionist policies are stifling global collaboration and innovation. When trade barriers and proprietary silos dominate, we lose the benefits of scale, and technologies that could reduce emissions or improve efficiency remain locked away.
India has long been a champion of frugal innovation and inclusive growth. From the Green Revolution to the Aadhaar platform, Indian success stories have often come from open collaboration between government, industry, and academia. The pandemic reinforced this lesson: India’s leadership in vaccine production and distribution was made possible by shared knowledge and global cooperation.
Today, the stakes are even higher. We are no longer talking about individual inventions, we are talking about system-critical climate solutions. The UN Technology Panel has identified diffusion as the biggest bottleneck: sustainable technologies aren’t spreading fast enough. In India, where industrial growth and climate goals must go hand in hand, this is a challenge we cannot afford to ignore.
At SKF, we are taking a bold step forward. We have launched The Patent Bay, a platform where companies can share patents related to sustainable development, free of charge. It’s a new kind of industrial policy, built from the ground up to accelerate innovation and adoption.
Our first contribution is Arctic 15, a steel alloy developed over years of research. It enables lighter, more efficient components in aircraft engines with the potential to reduce emissions by up to 25 per cent. But its true potential will only be realized if others build on it. That’s why we’re inviting Indian technology leaders from aerospace to automotive, from energy to infrastructure, to explore how Arctic 15 can be applied across sectors.
This isn’t about giving away competitive advantage. It’s about unlocking the part of our innovation portfolio that grows in value when shared. Collaboration leads to faster adoption, new partnerships, and broader impact. For India, this means accelerating our transition to clean energy, boosting Make in India, and strengthening our global competitiveness.
We call on Indian industry leaders, trade bodies, and policymakers: put your climate-impacting patents on the table. Let’s create a national movement for open innovation in sustainability. Let’s build an ecosystem where sharing selected technologies becomes a strategic advantage not a liability.
This is a moment of choice. Do we keep transformative knowledge behind closed doors, or do we open it up to drive progress? The answer will shape our climate response, our industrial competitiveness, and the future we build for India.
