The Roundtable on the future of the India–United States Energy Partnership at India Energy Week 2026 built on the momentum generated during last year’s conference, signalled a further deepening of ties between the two countries. Chaired by the Secretary MoPNG, the discussions underscored a rapidly maturing relationship, with the United States having already cemented its position as India’s sixth-largest energy trade partner.
In FY25, bilateral hydrocarbon trade between the two sides surged to over $13.7 billion, and both are now actively working to further enhance this volume across the crude oil, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) sectors.
A key shift in the partnership involves deeper financial integration. Indian energy majors, at the conference, expressed strong interest in securing equity participation in US LNG liquefaction projects, particularly in facilities currently under construction or nearing final investment decisions.
This move is designed to ensure long-term energy security for India while providing the US with stable, committed investment. Simultaneously, US companies are ramping up their presence in India’s upstream sector, partnering across the entire Exploration and Production (E&P) value chain and viewing India as a high-potential trading partner for gas.
The dialogue also ventured into the future of energy transition and industrial resilience. Both nations recognised their unique comparative advantages in the critical minerals sector, agreeing to collaborate on developing robust supply chains essential for the global shift toward clean energy.
This cooperation extends into the realm of high-tech innovation, with both sides exploring potential partnerships in Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) and hydrogen technology.
By combining American technical prowess with India’s massive market scale and engineering capabilities, the partnership is evolving from a traditional buyer-seller dynamic into a strategic, technology-driven alliance aimed at global energy leadership.
