Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday condoled the loss of lives for the mishap that took place in East Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya on Thursday.

The social media account of PMO announced an ex gratia of ₹2 lakh from PMNRF for the next of kin of each deceased as well as ₹50,000 to the people injured in the accident.

“Pained by the mishap in East Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest. An ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given ₹50,000: PM @narendramodi”

The incident occurred in the Thangsku area in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district, where about 18 labourers were killed, and several others were feared trapped following an explosion at a coal mine, which is believed to be illegal.
