Mumbai: The Global Industry Services division of the American Petroleum Institute (API), one of the world’s most influential energy standards bodies, is preparing to open a formal representative office in India.

The move comes in the backdrop of the proposed US-India trade deal and as India cements its position as the world’s third-largest energy consumer.

The institute, whose standards have been used in India for decades, is looking to establish its first office in New Delhi, close to policymakers and regulators, as it seeks deeper engagement with government agencies, public sector undertakings, manufacturers and academic institutions, it said.

“We have been present in India for a very long time through our standards and certifications. What has changed now is the scale and speed of India’s energy transformation,” Global Industry Services senior vice president Anchal Liddar told ET.

India will need upgraded infrastructure, safety frameworks and globally harmonised standards, and that is where API’s experience becomes highly relevant, Liddar said.
