Palamu (Jharkhand): Coal mining operations resumed at Central Coalfields Limited’s (CCL) Rajhara colliery in Jharkhand’s Palamu district on Saturday after remaining shut for nearly 16 years, reported news agency PTI.

Union Minister Satish Chandra Dubey inaugurated the resumption of operations at the mine, which had been closed since 2010. He said the revival of mining activities would generate employment, support regional development, and help reduce migration from the area.

The minister said the Rajhara project holds strategic importance for the region and that there has been a long-standing demand to restart the mine, which the government has accorded priority. Mining operations, he added, were halted earlier due to unavoidable reasons.

The BJP MP from Palamu said sustained efforts at multiple levels had finally led to the resumption of mining at the colliery. The Rajhara block contains an estimated 4.5 million tonnes of Grade-9 coal, he said.

CCL Chairman and Managing Director Nilendu Kumar Singh said the mine has a normal production capacity of 0.30 million tonnes per year, with the potential to scale up output to 0.50 million tonnes annually. He added that environmental clearance for the project is valid until February 2037, while the Consent to Operate remains in force until March 2026, with the renewal process currently underway.
