The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) will soon roll out a dedicated policy on compressed biogas (CBG), Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, said during a press meet at the India Energy Week in Goa on Thursday.

The forthcoming CBG policy will highlight the strong policy framework already in place across the value chain, including financial assistance for biomass procurement, support for aggregation machinery, schemes for pipeline infrastructure development, access to central financing and market development assistance.

These measures are aimed at strengthening feedstock supply, improving project viability and accelerating the scale-up of CBG projects across the country. On the occasion, India also released a coffee table book showcasing the progress and potential of the CBG sector.

Compressed biogas is emerging as the next major growth story. Although still at a nascent stage, the sector is witnessing rapid expansion, with around 170 plants operational in 2025 and more than 300 under construction. With sustained policy support, improved plant utilisation and stronger offtake markets, CBG production could increase nearly sevenfold by 2030.
